Take a Chance

I believe leadership can be found anywhere, in anyone. So, when I was assigned to interview a leader in my community for school, I decided to pick a leader that was not so obvious. I decided to pick a leader who isn’t as widely known as a principal, or the mayor.

For my leadership interview, I picked to interview the manager of the Montessori school my little sister goes to, Jennifer-or, as my little sister calls her: Miss Jennifer. For high school, she attended the IB program in Port Moody Secondary, before she decided IB was too much in Grade 11. When she was 18, her parents moved to Campbell Island and at 19 years old, she completely moved out on her own.

Like many other people, Jennifer had no idea about her career after she finished high school. She ended up at Vancouver Career College and earned her ECE (Early Childhood Education) certificate within a year instead of two. She was hired right after she finished her schooling. At 26, Jennifer has been full-time working for 8 years. Incredible. Currently, at the Montessori school, Jennifer helps out with the toddler program and supports the other teachers there.

Aside from her career, Jennifer has been part of Girl Guides for 20 years now-ever since she was 6 years old. From Sparks (ages 5-6 years), she has kept with Girl Guides for many years. For the past 10 years, she has been a leader of Girl Guides. Right now, she is a leader of Pathfinders (girls ages 12-14 years), and strives to make a positive difference to every girl in the group. She is like a trusted older sister to her Pathfinder group, and tries to be as understanding as possible to them.

Jennifer believes everyone needs a strong, trusted role model who can guide them through tough times. She is a role model to the Pathfinders who look up to her. As for Jennifer, she looked-and looks-up to her mother. Her mother is a strong woman, who was the most important role model to Jennifer. Aside from being her mom, she was also her trusted friend and confidant. She was a stay at home mom, and was always available when Jennifer needed guidance.

As far as living, Jennifer thinks that people need to set goals to succeed, that some things in life need to fall in to place, and that happiness is definitely important. At 26, Jennifer is the manager of a Montessori school and is the owner of her home (yes, doesn’t rent!). She is confident, patient, strong, and genuinely a nice person. There is no doubt in my mind that Jennifer’s goals will become her reality.
